LOCATION: VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA

This Robert Perry designed Union 36 is hull #4.  Built in Taiwan in 1976 she is a traditional, full keel, heavy displacement double ender, specifically designed for ocean sailing.  With her long keel, canoe stern, and masthead cutter rig, the Union 36 provides a balanced helm, well-suited for long ocean passages.

She is loaded with teak throughout - in the interior joinery, the cockpit and coamings, cap rail and bulwarks, and decks.  She turns heads at all anchorages and she captures the quintessential romantic feeling of traditional sailboats. She has an incredibly gentle motion at sea and gets going like a freight train when the wind is greater than 15 knots.  If you want a beautiful and safe vessel to explore local waters, or wander far afield as you explore exotic blue water destinations on a budget, this is your boat.

She has had over $50,000 CAD invested into her in the last four years, plus thousands of hours of labour. Her new owner will inherit a sound vessel that has had tremendous amounts of upkeep and love poured in over the last four years, as well as by the previous owner over the eight years before. The boat is simple in her systems which means less things to break, less time fixing gear and more time sailing and enjoying the wind and sea.

Description

The Union 36 is a good boat for the bluewater sailor, one that can take you offshore safely.  She will not get you there fast, but will get you there comfortably and in one piece.

The interior of the Union 36 is straightforward, with plenty of headroom and ventilation. It is a good-sized boat with lots of storage. Unlike more modern boats, she has good sea berths: one in the main saloon and a pilot berth aft.  There is also a large double berth forward and a convertible dinette, meaning she can sleep a total of six.

The main saloon features a large U-shaped dinette to port (with plenty of storage behind and beneath the seats) and a long settee to starboard. The settee pulls out to form a sea berth or additional seating for the dinette.

The U-shaped galley is located to port and contains a deep double sink, a three-burner stove/oven, and a 12-cubic-foot icebox. The galley is snug, secure and functional and contains numerous drawers, lockers, and other storage spaces.

Across from the galley is another sizable locker and a generously sized, stand-up navigation station. A large quarter berth occupies the starboard quarter.

Forward on the port side is a head compartment with shower, and across from the head is a large hanging locker.

Light and ventilation are provided by eight, oval-shaped, opening bronze ports, a large butterfly hatch in the main cabin, and a smaller hatch located in the V-berth. Both hatches are wood reinforced with stainless-steel rod.

She is a deep boat with a voluminous bilge, however, most of the bilge space is occupied by fuel and water tanks in an effort to lower the center of gravity and maximize tankage as much as possible.

Overall, the Union 36 is a good-looking boat, particularly for those who like the "traditional" canoe stern with lots of teak.
